Will my Norwegian learning go better if I listen to podcasts?
Many people listen to podcasts because they want to take advantage of the time they can listen to Norwegian “incidentally,” for example, while doing monotonous physical work, a long recreational walk, or repetitive physiotherapy exercises. But are you actually learning Norwegian while doing it? Maybe it’s more like listening to music for hours that “pampers the ears” but doesn’t teach you anything? You can maybe hum a single characteristic melody or repeat a single verse of a song.
I think a better idea is to listen to an audio file that you’ve already covered in your Norwegian course. When you listen to speech you understand, you should repeat the words and phrases you hear aloud. Of course, such text flies by like an arrow, and you won’t be able to repeat many words. However, if you play it again, you might be able to repeat different words or phrases.
Maybe one more time. This practice REINFORCES something you already understand. This way, you learn to speak Norwegian by moving your lips and projecting your voice, just like Norwegians do when speaking. After all, repeating words in your mind isn’t SPEECH, and you want to learn Norwegian!
