Is it worth taking the Norwegian exam (Norskprøve)?
Yes, it’s worth taking the Norwegian exam. I’ve been using the same argument to justify this opinion since I’ve been teaching Norwegian for 30 years. A Norwegian employer will see (whether now or during your next job application) that you respect the Norwegian language, its language. They’ll perceive this indirectly as a sign of respect for the country where you live and work, and in their minds, you’ll be someone who’s “fine,” who “does the right thing.” Ask your relatives living in your homeland how they feel when they’re served in a store by a foreigner who doesn’t speak local language, when they can’t communicate with a courier or a nurse because her language is too weak. Norwegians, of course, feel the same way.
This is the first and most important argument that makes the others pale in comparison: learn Norwegian and join Norskprove so that Norwegians will like you! And then your life in Norway will be better.
